U20 World Cup: What time to follow the matches?

As a reminder, Argentina only took over the organization of the tournament last April. Beforehand, it was to take place in Indonesia (where the last edition canceled due to the health crisis was already to take place). The Asian country was withdrawn from the organization after showing its desire not to see the Israeli team participate in the competition following popular pressure.

In total, 24 selections will compete and 52 matches will be scheduled over the three weeks of competition. During the two group stages, there will be four matches on the menu each day at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. The knockout stages are then played over three days, at 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. The quarter-finals take place over two days at the same times and the semi-finals will take place over a single day, always at 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. As for the final, it will be held on June 11 at 7:30 p.m.

As you can see, many matches will take place in the second half of the evening if you live in France. If you live in Africa, this constraint will be less present. For example, for a match at 11 p.m. in France, it will be 9 p.m. Senegal and in Gambiaand 10 p.m. to Nigeria as in Tunisia.

U20 World Cup stadiums

Four stadiums have been selected to host the competition:

  • Único Madre de Ciudades stadium, in Santiago del Estero (30,000 seats)
  • Bicentennial Stadium, San Juan (25,000 seats)
  • Único Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, in La Plata (53,000 seats)
  • Malvinas Stadium, in Mendoza (48,000 seats)

The referees

FIFA has selected 25 referees, 38 assistant referees and 18 video referees. Africa will be represented by the 4 central referees Bouh Abdel Aziz (Mauritania), Marouf Mohamed (Egypt), Sy Issa (Senegal) and Tom Abongile (South Africa). The assistant referees are Bangoura Nouha (Senegal), Brinsi Zakaria (Morocco), Dos Reis Monte Negro Albelmiro (Sao Tome and Principe), Adou N’Goh Hermann Désiré (Ivory Coast), Zerhouni Abbes Akram (Algeria) and De O Sanches Lopes Ivanildo Meirelles (Angola). As for the two video referees, they are El Fariq Hamza (Morocco) and Elshenawi Amr Ahmed Abdelrahim (Egypt).

The 4 African qualifiers for the U20 World Cup

Senegal, Nigeria, Tunisia and Gambia will therefore be the four representatives of the African continent. These teams have all secured their place by reaching at least the semi-finals of the last CAN U20, which took place a little over two months ago in Egypt.

In the land of the Pharaohs, and more specifically at the International Stadium in Cairo (74,000 seats), it was the Lion Cubs of Teranga who won the final – for the first time in their history – at the expense of Gambia (2-0), on March 11. Although haloed by this coronation, Malick Diaf’s troops lost in their first warm-up match against the United States (1-2) last Saturday at the Guamini stadium in Buenos Aires. The second test before the start of the competition will be against South Korea. Although having only participated in the U20 World Cup three times, the Cubs have always done well. In the last four in 2015, eighth finalists in 2017 and quarter-finalists in 2019, they will try to equal or even exceed their very good performance of eight years ago Their group (Japan, Israel, Colombia) seems to be in in any case sufficiently affordable to reach at least the round of 16, even ifthey will have to do without the two nuggets of FC Metz.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles unexpectedly fell to Gambia (1-0) in the CAN U20 2023 semi-finals, before console themselves against Tunisia (0-4) in the small final. During their preparation matches, they notably crushed the academy team Skylink FC (5-0) then drew against Colombia U20 (3-3) on Tuesday 16 May. They will need to be at 100% of their capacity to get out of their pool, to say the least raised (Italy, Brazil), even if the first match this Sunday, May 21 against the Dominican Republic seems more affordable. Finalists in 1989 and 2005 (Obi Mikel generation, Taye Taiwo), this time they will try to win the Grail, even if the tough competition makes the project very ambitious.

Tunisia therefore finished in 4th position in the last U20 Africa Cup of Nations. An honorable place despite the semi-final lost heavily against Senegal (3-0), and the match for third place, which had, as we mentioned above, turned in favor of Nigeria (0-4). Althoughamputated by Adem Garreb, they will try to put on a good face as soon as they enter the fray against England on Monday 22 May, before challenging Uruguay and then Iraq. This is the first participation of the Tunisians in the prestigious tournament since 1985, the year during which they were out in the first round and virgins of all points. We wish them to get the maximum for this new edition.

In Egypt, the Gambia achieved the best performance in its history during a CAN 2020. If the final had been mastered by the Cubs (2-0), it did not tarnish the beautiful course of the men of Abdoulie Bojang. In their group F, they will begin hostilities this Monday, May 22 against the most accessible team in their pool: Honduras. Then, they will challenge a heavyweight: France, then a solid team but a tone below: South Korea. Note that this is only their second participation in a World U20. The one and only time was in 2007 and they hadn’t been ridiculous (2-1 defeat against the Nigeria in the round of 16). For this 2023 edition, they hope to do at least as well, even if the task looks difficult.
